Family Style

Family Style Service simply means that servers bring out large platters of food, which are then placed on the tables for guests to pass and self-serve.

A Family Style Sit Down Dinner at your wedding creates a fun, community oriented feel. It also helps guests get to know each other since they often help serve one another and chat while doing so.

This type of service style has gained a lot of popularity in recent years because it is less formal than a plated meal, yet more formal than a buffet.

We would suggest serving a family style meal if you are envisioning a chic, yet casual and comfortable ambiance at your wedding.

Buffet

For Buffet style service, food is typically presented in chafing dishes and/or on Ceramic Platters.

Guests walk along either side of it to help themselves to the food. Or, to make it a bit more upscale, it is anoption to have staff at each dish to serve your guests.

A buffet at your wedding can be scaled up or down to match the formality of your wedding, but they definitely lend a more informal and relaxed feel than plated or family style meals.

They are best for casual weddings or when you are on a tighter budget.

Family Style is a Good Choice for You if:

  • You want to encourages your guests to interact
  • You want to create a warm, inviting atmosphere, while still allowing your guests to sit back and relax at the table
  • You’d like your guests to help themselves to as much or as little of each dish as they want

Food/Action Stations

Food or Action Stations are similar to a buffet. A station-style reception is one where the food is spread out among different “stations” throughout the reception space and Chefs typically prepare and serve foods at the buffet or in designated spaces amongst your guests, rather than in the kitchen.

At your wedding, foods that could be fun and work well for action station service include wok stations, mashed potato bars, fajitas, pastas, grilled meats, etc. Or stationary charcuterie, cheese, or salad stations.

Plated

At a plated meal, guests are seated and served by a wait staff at tables.

This style is the most traditional and formal service option.

Typically, guests are served three courses: salad, entrée (which is selected beforehand), and dessert.
